Capsule Hotels in Japan

Capsule hotels are a unique form of accommodations developed for working Japanese men who are too busy to go home. The hotels comprise of individual blocks of small, coffin sized living quarters with just enough room to sleep. Some capsules include a TV, a wireless internet connection, mirrors and alarm clocks. The capsules are stacked side by side in rows normally with one unit on top of the other, with steps providing access to the second level rooms. The capsules are sealed with a door or a curtain and bathroom facilities are normally shared. A locker key is usually provided to each guest to keep baggage in a locker outside the capsules.
The capsules cost 2500 to 4000 Yen per night (about $30 $50). Since this is cheaper than proper hotel rooms, they are often used by businessmen who worked too late to catch the train or stayed out drinking all night. Capsule hotels are also popular among budget travelers. With continued recession in Japan, as of early 2010.

Doca – Flatpack Coffee Table by Rafael Simoes Miranda

Brazilian designer Rafael Simoes Miranda brings his design talent to the coffee table, creating this cunning flatpack cardboard design. the table folds together like a piece of origami, creating an design that is green in more ways than one. Shown at the Milan furniture fair in 2005, this table created quite a stir, both for its functional and decorative design, and for the way that simple cardboard was transformed into a complex, load-bearing design.

The Memory Chair is covered in a layer containing recycled aluminium, which retains its form.

I took this photo of the Shadowy Chair during my recent visit to La Suite and didn’t know what it was until I searched a bit for Tord Boontje and found out at the excellent site of Bonluxat that this is a outdoor chair designed by Tord Boontje forMoroso. When I took the photo I thought: “This must be scorpion inspired!” What is your idea?

Moroso brought a range of major new products to the Milan Furniture Show this year. The basic concepts for this year’s show are lightness and playing with images – things are not always exactly what they seem – and a study of forms, colours and fabrics: super sophisticated, high-tech and new.

Tropicalia by Patricia Urquoila for Moroso
Description
The 2008 show will witness the presentation of the Tropicalia collection, the design of which starts off from the same structure as the Antibodi collection, though using weaving techniques.
The collection comprises a chaise longue, couch, armchair, chair, outdoor bed, swinging nest….
The design envisages a tubular steel structure with complex geometrical shapes, embellished with a clever weft of threads that alternate solids and voids to a specific pattern, paying meticulous attention to detail.
Each object in the collection takes on a different personality depending on the material and the colour used. It can be made playful and cheerful by using thermoplastic polymer threads free of heavy metal and recyclable, sophisticated and precious by using leather, simple and elegant by using HT polyester double plaited cords in either one or two colours.
The coloured versions are made using three threads combining different colors and creating interesting colour mixes.
Structure
Base in stainless or varnished steel, seat made of string weave available in 3 different versions:
- polymer
- polyester HT
- leather

The bedrooms have all become very simple in its expression. Head of the bed were still elevated, but simple and expressionless, except for LED lighting, which is required element of decoration. Bedside cabinets are oval or rectangular, but also very neutral. In the same way they created and front closet garderobnih – surfaces are smooth, simple, without too kombinacja color or material. However, give the impression of elegance and refinement, not boredom. A common element of the bedrooms, the library. Luster is required element of debcoration.
